An Early Peek at Classic Alternative (January 2004)
Over a nine-day span in late December 2003, four large market stations--KDLD/Los Angeles, KNDD/Seattle, KRQI/Seattle and WNNX/Atlanta--adopted Gold-oriented approaches to the Alternative format. These so-called Classic Alternative stations joined KBZT/San Diego, which successfully launched a Gold-based Alternative format a year earlier.
What exactly is Classic Alternative? Are the stations adopting the format taking consistent approaches to it from a musical standpoint?
An Early Peek at Classic Alternative reaches a clear conclusion: There is no consensus formula for Classic Alternative at this point. Our report covers a number of factors that lead us to this conclusion, such as each station's Average Era, their commitment levels to contemporary music and the textures of their music mixes.
