Printing

If you would like to print out any of the data, the best option is to click next to the name of each category you want a printout of in the Categories box in the upper left-hand corner. This will create a check mark next to each one. Then, choose “Print” from the “File” menu. In the window that appears next, make sure the “Print Checked Categories” option is selected. In addition, if you’re printing a category that displays many columns of data, make sure “Auto Scale” is selected as well; this option should allow you to fit many columns of data on one page.

Exporting to Spreadsheet

The data from any pcFACT category can easily be copied and pasted into the spreadsheet program of your choice. Simply right-click anywhere in the song data itself and choose “Copy To Clipboard” in the pop-up menu. Then, open your spreadsheet program and paste the data there. If you want all of the data from your study in one spreadsheet, we recommend copying the contents of the “All” category to the clipboard.

Working with Multiple Studies/Markets

The current version of pcFACT is not designed to work with multiple studies; however, we have come up with a “work-around” to avoid data corruption issues that can impact some users of multiple studies. When switching between studies, go to the C:\Program Files\Coleman Insights\pcFACT folder and delete the folder labeled “Data” that is already in there. (Please note that depending on the configuration of your PC, you may instead find the “Data” folder under C:\Program Files (x86)\Coleman Insights\pcFACT or C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\Coleman Insights\pcFACT if you’re a Windows 10 user.) The AppData folder in Windows is hidden.  One way to get to the pcFACT folder is to Right-click the Start button and select Run to open the Run command in Windows. (Or use the keyboard shortcut: Windows key   + R). In the Run Command box, type %localappdata%\virtualstore\Program Files (x86)\Coleman Insights\pcFACT and hit Enter on your keyboard. You will then see the Data folder.

Then, return to the folder where you have your pcFACT data files stored and double-click on the file for the new study with which you want to work. The pcFACT software will then start up and you will see the data from the study.

Moving Songs Among Categories

If you choose to change the Category assignments of songs from their original sort, the easiest way to do so is to right-click on the song, select “Move This Song” and then “To Category” in the menus that appear. Please note that it is not recommended to move songs from the All category; the All category is designed to contain the complete list of all songs tested in your study and moving songs from this category can cause data corruption problems. To add a song to a category that was not already sorted into one of your on-air categories, move it from the Inventory rather than the All category.

Error: Registry Key

If you receive an error message when opening pcFACT about not being able to create a registry key, you need to run the program once as a local administrator. Go to the C:\Program Files(x86)\Coleman Insights\pcFACT folder, right-click on pcFACT.exe, and select “Run as Administrator”. If you are not a local administrator, you will be prompted to supply a username and password for a local administrator.

After you run pcFACT as an administrator the one time, it creates the necessary registry key and you can now open pcFACT normally without running as an admin from then on.

Error: MEMO, Active Index Order or Category.fpt

If you receive an error message when opening a pcFACT data file about not having a MEMO, needing an Active Index Order, or unable to find a category file, you need to run the program in compatibility mode. Go to the C:\Program Files(x86)\Coleman Insights\pcFACT folder, right-click on pcFACT.exe and select Properties.  Switch over to the compatibility tab and check the box for “Run this program in compatibility mode for:” and select Windows XP (SP3) in the dropdown box just below. After selecting this compatibility mode option, every time you open pcFACT you will get a prompt whether to allow pcFACT to operate in this mode and you have to select yes for the program to run.

Note that if pcFCT has already gotten the error message, you should check in Task Manager whether pcFACT.exe is still running as a background process and end task on it. You will likely have to go to the virtual store folder listed below and delete the \colemaninsights folder. Also, if your IT department blocks users from setting the compatibility mode, you will need your IT department to set the compatibilit mode “for all users”.

This change is allowing pcFACT to place the working data folder in the same folder the program is running from, c:\program files (x86)\coleman insights\pcFACT.  Windows 10 does not allow this by default, forcing the data to go in the c:\users\[username]\appdata\local\virtualstore folder instead.  This causes pcFACT to get the error when trying to open and save the pcFACT data.  Using the Windows XP compatibility mode allows pcFACT to use its preferred data folder location.
